Coffee Drinkers - Here’s 14 ways to use your coffee grounds

We’ve been discussing natural living this month and ways we can reduce our impact on the planet. One of the gorgeous products that we showcased in our box this month was Bird and Wild coffee, a bird-friendly, shade grown, organic and fair-trade coffee that tastes amazing!

We have tackled what’s in our coffee cups and how taking a small step like sourcing this type of coffee can really help our flora and fauna, but what do you do with all the coffee grounds that you’re left with?

Coffee is still popular around the world, with us Brits consuming around 1.7 kg of coffee per year. That’s quite a lot of coffee grounds for us all to tackle so here’s our quick guide on some ideas on how to use your coffee grounds.

Outside Uses

Fertilisers: If you grow azaleas, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, camellias, roses, or other acid-loving plants, then used coffee is the fertilizer for you! Mix your old grounds with dead grass clippings, brown leaves, or dry straw to neutralize some of the acidity, the spread them around your plants. Used coffee grounds add nitrogen and potassium to the soil and helps plants to say super healthy!

Bug repellents: sprinkle the coffee grounds around your garden to protect them against destructive garden pests like ants, snails, and slugs.

Add to compost: coffee grounds make excellent green matter as they are rich in nitrogen. Beneficial worms may be attracted to your compost with the addition of old coffee. Make sure you add other stuff too so that you get the green and brown balance right.

Wheelie Bin Deodorant: sprinkle coffee grounds in the bottom of your wheelie bin, it removes the bad smells and odours.

Colour your flowers: This works especially well for hydrangeas as their colour can be manipulated simply by altering the pH levels of the soil. The coffee grounds reduces the pH level and will give you bright blue blooms.

Inside Uses:

Drain unblocker & deodoriser: If your drains are clogged, pour the grounds into the sink followed by liquid soap and a kettle of boiling water. The abrasive nature of the coffee grounds will help to break down any clogging.

Fridge Deodoriser: Used coffee grounds can be used much like baking soda for absorbing food odors in the refrigerator and freezer. Just load up a small open container with your old grounds, place it in the back of the fridge, then forget about it for a couple of weeks while you collect more grounds.

Household Cleaners: Mix your grounds with soapy water and scrub on the surface of the stain with a dishcloth. This is perfect for hard greasy stains and scrubbing tiles.

Get rid of Onion & Garlic smells: Simply rub used coffee grounds on your hands once you’re done with the chopping. The grounds will neutralise strong odours.

Get rid of furniture scratches: Mix up the grounds with vinegar and warm water and rub the paste gently on to the scratched surface. Use a cotton bud for thin and faint scratches.

Personal Uses:

Body Scrubs: Make coffee ground body scrubs, add olive oil and essential oils and use as a scrub. It’s fantastic for the skin and much better than factory made scrubs.

Get shiny hair: Add to your hair during your wash. The grounds remove any products and build up in your hair and leave it really shiny. It’s also great for brunettes as it darkens your hair!

Reduce eye puffiness: It’s not just teabags that can do this — coffee too has been known to remove puffiness from under your eyes. Simply mix up the coffee grounds with some water and make into a paste. Smear it on the affected area and leave to rest for 10–15 minutes.

Make candles: We all love candles, but did you know you can make them out of coffee grounds? You only need some wax and a few other bits to make brilliant coffee smelling candles! Check out Just Coffee for their easy how-to guide.

Bake with them: Baking with them is great fun, we have a gorgeous Coffee and Cardamom cake that is delicious using Bird & Wild coffee.
